Portugal have suspended Cristiano Ronaldo and opened disciplinary proceedings against the captain following his reported departure from the national team camp.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said the disciplinary process was initiated on October 9, 2026, to determine the implications of the incident reported two days earlier.
Ronaldo, 41, reportedly became frustrated after being left on the bench during Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway, despite warming up for about 30 minutes.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward reportedly left the national team camp three days after the match.
He later apologised and said he was awaiting the consequences of his actions.
In a statement, the FPF said the player had been placed under a preventive suspension in line with its disciplinary regulations.
“Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, by decision of the Non-Professional Section, on October 9, 2026, with the objective of ascertaining the potential disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on October 7, 2026,” the federation said.
It added that the matter had been referred to its Disciplinary Instruction Committee on October 10 for further investigation.
The federation said the proceedings would remain confidential until the investigation was concluded.
Ronaldo, one of Portugal’s most celebrated footballers, has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for his country, according to the report.
He is also closing in on the landmark of 1,000 career goals.
The disciplinary case comes as Portugal continues to rely on the veteran forward’s experience and leadership in international football.
