Principal urges parents, teachers to inculcate cultural values in children

Date:

An educationist, Christopher Ujumadubike, has charged parents and teachers in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to imbibe indigenous norms and cultural values in children.

Ujumadubike, who is the Principal of Wits Wisdom Ideal International School and College, Abuja, gave the advice while addressing participants at the maiden edition of the school’s Cultural Day celebration.

He said that cultural values such as respect for the elderly and parents are fast disappearing and called for a re-orientation, to ensure positive behavioural change.

He observed that the zeal to imbibe western culture by some youths was hindering the development of Nigeria’s cultural values.

“Socialisation methods are fast giving way to strange and stinky infiltration from the other side.

“Propagation, preservation and promotion of the Nigerian culture are seemingly mandatory to retain our indigenous languages, mode of dressing, morality, beliefs and values.

“The effect is our children’s inability to speak and understand their mother-tongue; our young men and women behave and appear every inch American.

“It is necessary for parents and teachers to ensure proper upbringing by instilling cultural values in this young ones because it is their responsibility.

“If that is done it will help to proffer solution to the lingering decay in our cultural values in the society,” he said.

Ujumadubike said one of the avenues to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the country was the school cultural day.
