The Provost of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Dr Samuel Akintunde, has stressed the need for the government at all levels to place more emphasis on the establishment of skill acquisition centers for the school graduates to learn vocations in addition to their certificates.
According to him, the move will reduce the over dependence on white-collar jobs among the youths in the country.
Akintunde, spoke in Ondo town, Ondo State, while delivering a lecture at the launching of a security network and a book written by the a former president of a socio-cultural group, the Ekimogun Youths Congress, Mr Eric Famogun.
The lecture was titled, “Creating a culture of the needed change in Nigeria’.
Stressing the importance of technical and vocational education for the youths in the society, the educationist explained that for a country to achieve technological advancement and economic development, there was urgent need for a review of school curriculum contents in order to make it more practical in approach
He said such step would help in providing opportunities for students to become self-employed after they had graduated from the higher institutions.
Akintunde said, “I wish to advice and appeal to the three tiers of government in Nigeria to create more awareness on vocational and technical education and provide more funds for its development. I want to assure you that over-dependence on while-collar job among the youths is the bane of the problem of unemployment we are facing in this country”
