Rainfall: Residents in Mabushi, Kurudu placed on ‘heavy’ flood alert

Residents in Mabushi District and Kurudu, a satellite town in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been placed on flood alert, as they are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding in their areas.
This was contained in a statement issued by the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Centre, Federal Ministry of Environment Abuja and made available to FCT Emergency Management Department(FEMD).
According to the statement, the locations in FCT may experience flooding within the period of prediction 21st – 25th July, 2024.
FEMD noted that following the early warning, its Ag Director General, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme called on the Satellite Towns Development Department(STDD) to clear all blocked drainages in Kurudu and also evacuate solid waste dumped indiscriminately in the area.
Wenegieme also called on the FCT Facility Maintenance and Management Department to desilt blocked manholes in Mabushi District, to ensure free flow of water in the event of heavy rains.
She also urged Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to clear all blocked drainages and ensure evacuation of waste in the district to mitigate the impact of flooding.
She however, disclosed that the FEMD’ Search and Rescue team has been placed on alert in the event of possible flooding.
She equally appealed to residents to always heed to early warnings issued by the Department to ensure the safety of lives and property.
Wenegieme also urged residents to always use the 112 emergency toll free number in the event of a disaster.
