A heavy rainstorm accompanied by strong winds has killed two people and destroyed more than 50 houses in Dokan Mai-Jama’a, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The downpour started around 6:41 p.m. on Monday and lasted for over 40 minutes, leaving a trail of destruction across the community.
Many residents have been displaced after losing their homes completely or sustaining severe structural damage, including blown-off roofs.
Confirming the incident, the Village Head of Dokan Mai-Jama’a, Alhaji Hamisu Tukur, said over 50 houses were severely affected. He added that the extent of the damage had left several families without shelter and in urgent need of assistance.
The storm also impacted parts of the Sabon Gyero Community, where several houses and more than 10 perimeter fences were destroyed.
Victims of the disaster have appealed to the Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the State Emergency Management Agency for immediate help to reduce the impact.
In response, NEMA has sent a team to the affected areas to evaluate the full extent of the damage and identify the immediate needs of those displaced.
As the rains worsen across the state, local authorities are calling for quick action to provide relief supplies and temporary shelter for those affected.
