The chairman senate committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dino Melaye yesterday avoided meeting the officials of Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to receive his recall notice.
The Commission had gone to National Assembly complex to formally notify Melaye of the petition and his recall notice, but could not serve him the notice due to his unavailability.
Recall that Dino had told journalists that accepting any ‘purported’ petition from INEC would result to breaching the 1999 Constitution (amended).
‘’The 90 days period as provided for in the Constitution for conducting the referendum after our verification, elapsed on Sept. 23, 2017.” he said.
It was reported that the lawmaker had purposely locked his office and gone to the senate chamber to avoid receiving the petition when the officials arrived.
However, the commission’s officials dropped loads of documents at the door of Melaye’s office which was locked.
INEC acknowledged receiving petition from Melaye’s constituent asking for his recall with over 52% registered voters’ signatures.
Hence, the commission had resumed the recall process since a federal high court in Abuja ruled for the continuation of the process.
