The House of Representatives on Thursday held a moving valedictory session in honour of the late former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Agunwa Anekwe, celebrating his courage, humility, and historic contribution to Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, announced that the National Assembly would immortalise all former presiding officers by naming halls within the complex after them — a symbolic gesture of gratitude to those who shaped the institution.
Anekwe, who served as Speaker from 1992 to 1993 during the Third Republic, was remembered as a man of uncommon integrity who guided the House through one of the most turbulent political eras in Nigeria’s history.
“This honour is not merely ceremonial,” Speaker Abbas said. “It affirms that our democracy remembers those who built its foundation on integrity rather than ambition. Rt. Hon. Agunwa Anekwe accepted the challenge of leadership with humility, discipline, and a deep sense of service.”
Abbas described Anekwe’s leadership as “a beacon of restraint, fairness, and conviction,” adding that even amid tensions between civilian politicians and the military, he upheld the independence and dignity of the legislature.
