Reps Order Probe into NYSC Member’s Death in Enugu, Give Panel Four Weeks

Date:

The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Comrade Etimbuk Daniel Sunday, at the NYSC orientation camp in Enugu State, amid allegations of inadequate medical care and concerns over the condition of his body when it was released to his family.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, Hon. Idem Unyime, who raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s death on October 11, 2026.
The House expressed concern over reports that the deceased, a former president of the Students’ Union of Akwa Ibom State University, visited the camp clinic on October 7 after experiencing symptoms associated with malaria or typhoid.
According to the motion, he received initial treatment and was discharged with oral medication. However, questions were raised about the adequacy of the treatment, the subsequent deterioration of his condition and an alleged delay in referring him to a hospital for further medical attention.
The lawmakers said an independent investigation was necessary to determine whether appropriate medical procedures were followed and whether timely referral to a hospital could have prevented the tragedy.
The House also expressed concern over allegations that Sunday’s body was released to his family naked and with visible bruises, describing the circumstances as requiring a thorough, impartial and independent investigation.
Consequently, the House mandated its Committees on Youth Development, Health Care Services, Police Affairs and Human Rights to jointly investigate the incident and submit their findings within four weeks.
The committees are expected to examine the medical attention provided to the deceased, the handling of his deteriorating condition, the alleged delay in hospital referral and the circumstances surrounding the release of his body to his family.
The investigation is also expected to establish the facts surrounding his death, identify any lapses and recommend appropriate measures to ensure accountability where wrongdoing is established.
Beyond the specific incident, the House urged the Federal Ministries of Youth Development and Health and Social Welfare, alongside the NYSC Directorate, to review and strengthen healthcare delivery and emergency response systems at orientation camps nationwide.
The lawmakers stressed the need for adequately equipped camp clinics, qualified medical personnel, prompt hospital referrals and effective emergency response procedures to safeguard the lives and wellbeing of corps members during their national service.
They said strengthening healthcare services at orientation camps was critical to preventing avoidable deaths and ensuring that corps members receive timely and appropriate medical attention whenever emergencies arise.
