The Bill seeking to end trafficking in person and to prohibit racketeering with human pregnancy and the operation of baby production factory, have scaled through for a second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.
The House described the incident as a serious crime, which deserves to be punished by the law and proposed a 10-year jail term for baby factory operators.
Sponsor of the Bill, Rep Eddie Mbadiwe said if the Bill is passed into law, it will end harbouring of pregnant persons under the age of 18 years and above as well as selling or attempting to sell newly-born babies in the country.
Mbadiwe explained that given the continuing spread of such baby producing factories, the Bill’s passage into law would be timely and restore the human dignity to both the babies and the mothers. Contributing, Rep Farouk Lawan (PDP Kano), urged his colleagues to pass the Bill, adding that it would be important process for the House to launch the process of amending the laws towards punishing erring individuals.
He said the existence of the production centre of human babies in Nigeria portends great danger to the future of the country, in that the children may likely end up in life that would be detrimental to Nigeria.
The committees of human rights and that of justice were then mandated by the presiding deputy speaker, Emeka Ihedioha to carry further legislative works on the Bill.
