The House of Representatives may next week kick-start debate on the controversial amendments to the 1999 constitution proposed by delegates to the National Conference, which ended in August.
This was revealed yesterday during a media parley with members of the House of Representatives Press Corps by the chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, Rep Zakari Mohammed (APC Kwara).
Rep Mohammed said the compressed version of the bulky reports, which was sent to the House by the Executive, was subsequently consigned to members for their perusal noting that each member would be expected to contribute to the debate and eventual adoption of the report.
According to him, since the bulk of the amendments as proposed by the delegates to the conference are already in public domain and mostly reflects the yearnings of the populace, the House will have little or no issues with the proposals.
It would be recalled that the conference held in Abuja from March through August had proposed several amendments to the constitution including abrogation of the immunity clause, restructuring of the tier of governments, whereby the local government will ceased to be created exclusively by the federal government, creation of state supreme court, special election courts, state police, adjustment in revenue allocation as well as derivation principle, however was inconclusive.
