In response to growing concerns over the integrity of the legislative body, Nigeria’s House of Representatives has resolved to investigate allegations of misconduct against Rep. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, member representing Aba North/Aba South federal constituency under the platform of APGA.
The decision of the House followed a passionate call from House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere during Tuesday’s plenary, urging members to uphold the House’s image and reputation.
Citing Order 5 of the House standing rules, Ihonvbere emphasized the need for accountability within the chamber, stating, “Any conduct that brings the House into disrepute must be addressed promptly and thoroughly.”
The incident under investigation occurred on Sunday, involving an altercation between Ikwechegh and an e-hailing driver, Citizen Stephen Abuwatseya.
The dispute, which reportedly began as a minor misunderstanding, escalated, leading Ikwechegh to issue a public apology and express regret over the matter.
In his statement, Hon. Ikwechegh conveyed his remorse, acknowledging that his actions did not align with the standards expected of him. He addressed Citizen Abuwatseya, his family, and the general public, admitting the distress caused by the incident.
The apology reads, “I recognize the distress and frustration this incident has caused Citizen Abuwatseya, his family, and the public at large,” Ikwechegh said, adding, “As a public servant, I understand the weight of my role and how my actions impact others.”
He further disclosed that he and Abuwatseya have reached an amicable resolution to move beyond the incident.
Hon Ikwechegh also extended an apology to the Inspector General of Police, acknowledging any unintended implications his remarks may have had on the police force’s leadership and the institution itself. Reaffirming his respect for the Nigerian Police Force, he expressed gratitude for its efforts in maintaining public order.
Expressing contrition toward the House leadership and his colleagues, Ikwechegh noted that the incident could affect public trust in the legislative institution.
“This experience has been a humbling reminder of the need for restraint and self-control, especially in challenging situations,” he said, reiterating his commitment to accountability and personal growth as a representative.
