The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State has escalated after two opposing factions announced different candidates for the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
One faction, led by Tanimu Turaki, endorsed Mohammed Yayari as its governorship candidate and presented him with a Certificate of Return during a ceremony held on Wednesday.
Party leaders at the event emphasized loyalty to the PDP, warning candidates against defecting after securing nominations.
Speaking at the gathering, PDP stalwart Ibrahim Turaki stressed that the party would no longer tolerate candidates abandoning its platform after obtaining mandates, while National Organising Secretary Theophilus Shan expressed confidence in the party’s readiness for future elections.
However, in a competing move, another faction of the party convened a separate National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja and unveiled former Communications Minister Isa Pantami as its governorship candidate for Gombe State.
The rival camp, headed by Abdulrahman Mohammed, also distributed Certificates of Return to candidates it claimed had been duly recognised and forwarded to the electoral authorities.
The emergence of two different governorship candidates has exposed deep divisions within the PDP in Gombe State, raising fresh questions about the party’s internal cohesion and its preparedness for the 2027 governorship contest.
With both factions insisting on the legitimacy of their respective candidates, the dispute is expected to intensify and could ultimately require intervention from the party’s national leadership or the courts before the election season gathers momentum.
