As part of measures to strengthen water, sanitation and hygiene practice in Bwari Area Council of Abuja, the FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Directorate otherwise known as FCT RUWASSA in partnership with WaterAid Nigeria provided modern toilets, bathrooms and hand washing stations at Government Junior Secondary School, Tudun Fulani in Bwari Area Council.
Speaking during a tour of the facilities shortly after commemorating this year’s global hand washing day at the school, Executive Director of FCT RUWASSA, Dr. Mohammed Ali Dan-hassan urged students and host community to make best of use of the facilities.
A statement signed by Head, Media and Publicity at FCT RUWASSA, Karo Sani Bala, stated that Dan-hassan who was represented by Head of Community Mobilization and Hygiene Promotion of the Directorate, Alh. Hussaini Abdulkadir also enjoined them imbibe the culture of washing hands regularly with soap and water, so to prevent themselves from diseases such as cholera, and typhoid.
Addressing students on the significance of the day, Coordinator of WASH in Bwari Area Council, Mr. Williams Kolo, urged them to take home what was imparted to them about personal hygiene and applaud RUWASSA and WaterAid for bringing the programme to the school.
In his remarks, the Village Head of Tudun Fulani Malam Abdul’aziz Yahaya Musa equally thanked RUWASSA and WaterAid for making the the school in his community as a model for WASH activities.
Highpoint of the event was the recognition of practical demonstration of the best hand washing with soap by Head of Sanitation, RUWASSA, Mrs. Aisha Bakpet to the pupils, staff and community, which was demonstrated by the groups.
It was gathered that, projects executed in the collaboration of RUWASSA and WaterAid include five modern females friendly toilets for staff and students, three bathrooms, and two hand washing stations.
Global Hand washing day is an annual event marked on 15th of every October by the United Nations.
