Saka strike sinks Villa as Arsenal maintain perfect start

Bukayo Saka’s second-half goal earned Arsenal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday, giving the Premier League champions maximum points from their opening two matches.

Saka struck shortly after the hour mark after Eberechi Eze combined with Riccardo Calafiori, whose low delivery across goal allowed the England forward to finish from close range and seal Arsenal’s victory.

The result keeps Arsenal’s perfect start intact and strengthens their early title credentials, while Villa remain without a point after two matches.

Villa started brightly as captain John McGinn curled an effort over the bar before Emiliano Buendia came close to opening the scoring.

Buendia’s 22-yard effort beat David Raya but crashed against the crossbar.

Arsenal gradually took control of possession but struggled to break through Villa’s disciplined defence.

Neither side managed a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Villa resumed the second half on the front foot, with Ian Maatsen firing wide.

Arsenal then appeared to have been awarded a penalty in the 54th minute after Maatsen brought down Saka inside the area.

Referee Jarred Gillett initially pointed to the spot before VAR intervention showed that the contact had occurred outside the box.

The penalty decision was subsequently overturned.

Martin Ødegaard narrowly missed with the resulting free-kick as Arsenal continued to press.

Their pressure eventually paid off when Saka converted Calafiori’s delivery to put the visitors ahead.

Villa responded by committing more players forward in search of an equaliser.

However, Arsenal’s defensive organisation frustrated the hosts and limited their clear opportunities.

Nicolas Jackson, making his first start for Villa following his move from Chelsea, created an opening for McGinn, but the midfielder failed to make proper contact before Matty Cash’s follow-up effort was blocked.

Villa later appealed for another penalty after Maatsen went down inside Arsenal’s box.

Gillett waved away the appeal, while VAR did not intervene.

Arsenal threatened on the counter as Villa pushed forward, with Kai Havertz forcing a save from debutant goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

Despite late pressure from the hosts, Arsenal held their shape and managed the closing stages to secure another three points.

The defeat leaves Villa still searching for their first points of the campaign, while Arsenal return to London with maximum points from their opening two fixtures.
