The School for Maternal New born Health, of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine United Kingdom, has donated training equipment to five Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) hospitals under its “Making it Happen” programme.
According to a statement issued at the weekend by the Head, public relations unit, FCT Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS), Badaru Yakasai, the equipment donated includes Mannequins and models ( little Anne, resusci baby, Lucy & mum, MVA pelvis, obstetric Phantom and baby resuscitation equipment, manuals, posters and other sundry equipment.
Receiving the equipment in his office, the General Manager FCT Hospital Management Board, Dr. Aminu Mohammadu Mai, said said the hospitals in FCT that benefitted from the gesture are Wuse, Nyanya, Gwarinpa, Kubwa and Kuje general hospitals.
He noted that in the country, FCT and Niger state are the beneficiaries of the programme, which is being implemented in eleven countries in Sub Saharan Africa and South East Asia,
Dr. Mai further explained that the aim of the “Making it Happen” programme is to reduce maternal and new born mortality and morbidity by increasing the availability and quality of skilled birth attendance and Emergency obstetric Care and New born Care (EOC & NC)
The General Manager disclosed that the programme has trained over 300 doctors and midwives in FCTA in EOC & NC over the last two years both in hospitals as well as Primary Health facilities with the objectives of fast tracking the attainment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5.
Speaking earlier the leader of the delegation the Senior Technical Officer of the programme, Dr. Sa’adatu Sule, said the programme has trained a pool of masters trainers supported with a full set of training equipment which was donated to Maitama District Hospital at the initial phase of the programme
He said the local trainers have since conducted a couple of trainings on their own in line with the sustainability strategy, adding that the additional skills training rooms currently being set up with the new equipment in the five additional hospitals will go a long way in consolidating the strengthening the local capacity for sustained and continuous training in EOC & NC.
