Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), Dr Ighodalo Folorunso Ijagbone yesterday lamented the unethical practice of engaging unqualified persons in laboratories as technologies in the country.
He implored management of institutions to stop this unwholesome practice, as, according to him, it is against the ethics of the science profession.
Dr. Ighodalo disclosed this at a training workshop on Science Laboratory Equipment Instrumentation jointly organized by National Board for Technical Education NBTE and NISLT held in kaduna.
According to him, the use of unqualified personnel in laboratories is against transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“Our findings over the years revealed that this has resulted to poor equipment management and maintenance which lead to loss of huge financial resources in view of the capital intensive nature of the laboratory equipment.
“We, therefore, implore management of institutions to stop this unwholesome practice since it’s against the spirit and objectives of the transformation agenda of President Jonathan,” he said.
He also said NISLT is currently undertaking national inspection of science laboratories in the country.
In his remarks, NBTE’s Executive Secretary Dr. Mas’ud Adamu Kazaure said the workshop would seek to develop several laboratory instrument capabilities to meet emerging needs of Nigeria’s industry.
The Executive Secretary, who spoke through NBTE Director Human Resource, Alhaji Sharif Sanda, said NISLT in collaboration with NBTE will continue to focus on building upon firm foundation in instrumentation/measurement capabilities which they facilitated over the years, and further strengthening capabilities in areas of research and development.
