A former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has cautioned members of the judiciary against actions capable of weakening Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
Tambuwal gave the warning while addressing delegates at the national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja.
Speaking amid growing political tensions in the country, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding democracy, urging judges to resist any form of external influence.
He reminded judicial officers of the consequences of controversial rulings in Nigeria’s history, making reference to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which remains a defining moment in the nation’s democratic journey.
According to him, those entrusted with leadership positions must act with integrity, noting that their decisions would be judged not only by history but also by future generations.
Tambuwal further admonished judges and justices to uphold accountability and avoid actions that could compromise the nation’s institutions, warning that any attempt to manipulate the judicial process could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s unity and democratic stability.
He concluded by urging those in positions of authority to remain conscious of their responsibilities and resist pressures aimed at undermining the rule of law.
