The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria may have shifted it’s resumption to the second week in October, PEOPLES DAILY Newspapers gathered authoritatively.
However, the House of Representatives is set to reconvene Tuesday , 26 September ,2023 barring any last minute change.
The shift in the resumption of the Senate , PEOPLES DAILY Newspapers gathered was as result of the two extra weeks it spent to attend to the executive communications by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
While the National Assembly was getting set to commence her annual vacation, President Tinubu sent the first batch of his ministerial nominees for screening and confirmation for appointment as ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Tinubu had forwarded the nominations at the time to avoid running into constitutional violation and stipulations that the President shall appoint ministerial cabinet not more than sixty days from the date of inauguration .
A credible source told our PEOPLES DAILY Newspapers that the Senate , except in a case of overwhelming matter of urgent public concern , will reconvene in the second week of October .
This will enable the lawmakers complete there holidays inline with the legislative calendar .
It was also gathered that some opposition senators and members of the House of Representatives have expressed concerns over the resumption of the newly appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his deputies without parliamentary approval .
It was gathered that the aggrieved lawmakers may raise those concerns as the National Assembly sets to reconvene .
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said , ” if the newly appointed CBN Governor and his deputies were already staff of the institution it would be a different thing all together , but having to resume from outside when you are not yet confirmed will be a wrong precedence and it is not something to overlook .
” Some people have cited the cases of Service Chiefs , but they have forgotten that the service Chiefs are usually part of the system before the appointments . It won’t change anything significantly but it is not a good development .
” We don’t want a situation where subsequent appointments by the President will take this same method , I’m a member of the APC but I don’t think it is right to do this , because it will set a wrong precedence . So I will urge the opposition to raise the matter when we resume because if some of us do that ,it will be interpreted differently and that is how our politics is played here , people don’t see things from a rational point of view”.
