The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has denied issuing any directive for Muslims to embark on prayers seeking the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
In a statement on Monday, the Secretary-General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, described as false and misleading a viral claim that the council had threatened that elections would not hold unless its demands were met.
The council said it “categorically dissociates” itself from the claims in their entirety, stressing that no such directive or statement was ever issued.
“At no time did the council issue any directive, statement, or call of such nature,” the statement read.
“These fabrications are not only false but are clearly intended to mislead the public, create unnecessary tension, and drag the council into the murky and often divisive waters of partisan political contestation.”
The council maintained that it remains a reputable religious body committed to promoting justice, equity, moral rectitude, and peaceful coexistence among citizens.
It added that it operates above partisan interests and has consistently kept a principled distance from political manipulation and narratives capable of undermining national stability.
However, the council reaffirmed its earlier position that the INEC chairman should either resign or be relieved of his duties.
It said the stance was not politically or religiously motivated but based on concerns over what it described as actions and dispositions showing prejudice against Islam and Muslims.
According to the statement, such alleged sentiments are inconsistent with the neutrality, integrity, and patriotism required of a holder of such a sensitive national office.
The council urged the public, particularly the Muslim Ummah and the media, to disregard what it termed false narratives and rely only on its official channels of communication.
It also reiterated its commitment to fostering a just, peaceful, and prosperous society, adding that it would not allow itself to be used for political manipulation or be distracted by “mischief-makers.”
