Former Nigerian First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan has charged young Nigerian ladies to shun prostitution, drug abuse and all manner of vices in the society, as they should be role models by the dignity they carry as women, wives and mothers.
Dame Jonathan expressed serious concerns over the involvement of young ladies in all manner of vices including, drug addiction, prostitution/girl child trafficking, alcoholism, cultism, cybercrimes, indecent dressing and rituals.
According to her, these absurdities are worrisome and have unfortunately taken their toll on young girls, some of whom are Nigeria female undergraduate students, as they are undoubtedly barriers to the achievement of the goals and aspirations of girls and women.
She made this point yesterday, in her speech delivered on her behalf by hon. Safiya Umar, at the conference organised by Association of Nigeria Female Students (ANFS) and her investiture as grand matron of ANFS.
Also, she said : “I understand this group is the umbrella body of all female undergraduates of institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. As an all embracing body of female students, your association is a veritable channel to reach out to and impact fellow females.
“This association must therefore campaign against these vices, and I am sure you will receive support from the media and many female organizations.
“The role of women in the development of this country cannot be over emphasized. You are not only the future mothers and wives of this country, but also future leaders, business women, heads of parastatals and captains of industries.
“I therefore encourage you to remain focused and law abiding in order to excel in your chosen careers.”
Similarly, in her goodwill message by the pioneer Mandate Secretary, FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, commended the association for its dedication to empowering and uplifting girls, as its efforts are crucial in shaping a brighter future for the nation.
She noted that girls’ education remains a cornerstone of societal progress, as it unlocks opportunities, breaks cycles of poverty, and fosters inclusive growth.
On her part, Acting Director, FCT Reform Coordination and Service Improvement Department, Dr. (Mrs.) Jumai Ahmadu, urged leaders and members of the association to remain focused on empowering themselves with education.
According to her, they should allowed themselves to be distracted from their studies or be lost in the struggle for space in leadership positions at their various institutions, so as to achieve their goals in the society.
Ealier, the ANFS National President, Amb. Comrade Princess Omoniyi Alice, who noted the need to promote a culture of inclusivity and respect for women, explained that creating an environment where women feel safe and supported, where they are valued for their contributions and their ideas.
She said it is the responsibility of educators and leaders to ensure that female students have the tools they need to succeed.
“We live in a world that is rapidly changing, and it is essential that we adapt our education system to meet these changes. They must be able to compete on a level playing field, free from discrimination or unfair barriers.
“We must also challenge the traditional gender roles that have limited women’s opportunities in the past. We must encourage our female students to pursue careers in STEM fields, business, and politics. In conclusion, let us work together to create a brighter future for our female students.
“Let us strive to provide them with the support and resources they need to excel in their chosen fields.
Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of our female students and in the future of our society.”
Highpoint of the event was the launch the maiden edition of ANFS Magazine named: “The Face of Women’s Libbers”.
