Sokoto Governor launches malaria prevention campaign, targets 75% reduction

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has flagged off the 2026 seasonal malaria prevention campaign, targeting the reduction of malaria cases in children by 75 per cent .
Launching the campaign on Wednesday in Wamakko, Governor Aliyu reiterated his unwavering commitment to reducing the burden of malaria across the state.
He thanked traditional and religious leaders, local council officials, and the “dedicated mass drug distributors who go from house to house to administer these drugs to the targeted children.”
According to the governor, malaria is a major public health challenge, especially during the rainy season when mosquitoes breeding grounds become rampant, making cases of malaria common and deadly.
“The seasonal malaria chemo prevention strategy has proven to work by giving monthly doses of anti-malaria vaccines to children aged 3 to 59 months during the peak rainy season.
“We can reduce malaria cases by up to 75%, which means fewer hospital visits.”
He commended the state Malaria Elimination Agency, development partners, the National Malaria Elimination Programme, and the Malaria Consortium for sustaining the yearly life-saving malaria prevention campaign.
Also speaking, the Commissioner of Health, Dr Faruk Wurno, said that enough personnel and drugs have been mobilised to ensure the success of the campaign.
In his remarks, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, represented by the District Head of Wamakko, Alhaji Ahmed Barade, pledged sustained support to ensure the success of the malaria prevention campaign.
The Sultan vowed to fully mobilize citizens of the state to participate in the exercise.
