Sokoto Governor orders speedy completion of road, market projects

Date:

From Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto
Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has inspected ongoing construction of two rural roads and the new Gada Market in Gada Local Government Area.
This was contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Sokoto by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Sokoto.
The road projects include the 9.5-kilometre Gada–Bakin Kasuwa–Tsitse–Tabanni–Ila Gari Road, awarded at the cost of over N2.8 billion, with a completion period of 18 months and currently at 75 per cent completion.
The second road inspected was the 21.8-kilometre Kaffe–Tsitse–Gidan Hashimu–Karangiya–Kaddi–Arawa Road, awarded at the cost of about N5.2 billion, which has reached 65 per cent completion.
The governor also inspected the ongoing construction of the new Gada Market.
Speaking shortly after the inspection, Governor Aliyu commended the quality of work being executed on the two roads and the market project.
“I am impressed with the quality of work being executed on these projects, however, I am dissatisfied with the slow pace of work. Unless the contractor speeds up execution, the projects may not be completed within the stipulated timeframe.”
The governor noted that upon completion, the two rural roads would significantly improve socio-economic development in the benefiting communities.
“Gada, as we all know, is largely an agrarian community and one of Nigeria’s leading producers of onions and garlic. This underscores the need to provide infrastructure that will facilitate farming activities in the area,” he added.
Governor Aliyu reassured the people at the grassroots of his administration’s unwavering commitment to rural development, stressing that rural roads, water supply, healthcare delivery, education, and agriculture would continue to receive the attention they deserve.
On the market project, the Governor expressed optimism that, upon completion, it would create employment opportunities for many able-bodied youths, boost the state’s internally generated revenue, and stimulate economic growth and development.
Earlier, while briefing the Governor on the projects, the Special Adviser on Rural Roads, Malami Muhammad Galadanci, said culverts and drainage structures had already been completed. He added that the ongoing road construction was already bringing relief to farmers transporting their produce to Gada town.
“Your Excellency, before the award of this contract, farmers paid as much as N10,000 to transport each sack of onions or garlic to Gada Market. With the ongoing construction, the cost has dropped to about N1,000 per sack,” he said.
Galadanci further disclosed that the State Government was not owing any contractor a single kobo on the three projects, noting that it had fulfilled all its financial obligations under the partnership arrangement.
According to him, the Gada Market project, which comprises dedicated sections for onions, garlic, grains, and an abattoir, was awarded at the cost of about N2.5 billion and has reached 48 per cent completion.
The contractor assured the Governor that the project would be delivered within the stipulated timeframe.
The project consultant also disclosed that the market would be equipped with a solar power network, firefighting facilities, and a water reticulation system.
The Governor was accompanied on the inspection tour by the Leader of the APC in the State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Goronyo, the Emir of Kauran Namoda in Zamfara State, retired Maj. Sanusi Muhammad Asha.
Others were  the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga; former Deputy Governor, Barrister Mukhtar Shagari, the member representing Bodinga, Dange-Shuni and Tureta Federal Constituency, Nasiru Shehu and the Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa.
The rest were the Chief of Staff, Government House, Sokoto, Aminu Haliru Dikko, the Head of Service, Abdulkadir Ahmed, commissioners, special advisers, senior special assistants, and other government officials.
