Senator Ibrahim Lamido

Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, has attributed his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to what he described as the government’s inadequate response to worsening insecurity in his constituency.
The lawmaker, who recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said during a media briefing in Sokoto on Thursday that persistent attacks by bandits have left residents vulnerable and exposed to daily threats.
He lamented that killings, abductions and mass displacement have become frequent occurrences in the area, severely affecting livelihoods and disrupting economic activities.
Lamido criticised both the state and federal governments for what he termed a failure to decisively tackle the security crisis, noting that his constituents have lost confidence in the current approach.
According to him, the decision to switch political allegiance was influenced by growing calls from the people for an alternative platform capable of addressing their security concerns more effectively.
The senator, however, acknowledged internal legal disputes within the ADC but maintained that such issues would not deter his commitment to the party.
He also dismissed claims by Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, that security operations in parts of the state are improving, insisting that Sokoto East continues to grapple with serious threats.
Lamido warned that fear now dominates daily life in many communities, with residents limiting movement due to the risk of attacks.
He called for urgent steps, including increased deployment of security personnel, enhanced intelligence gathering and improved logistics to combat insecurity.
The lawmaker further advocated humanitarian assistance for displaced persons, alongside long-term strategies to address poverty and unemployment, which he identified as root causes of the crisis.
He reiterated his resolve to continue pushing for measures that would ensure the protection of lives and property in his constituency.
