Sokoto State Hisbah Board Bans ‘Extravagant’ Weddings
From Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto
The Sokoto State Hisbah Board has announced the prohibition of certain innovations during wedding celebrations it said are immoral and not in tune with good conduct
The order takes effect immediately.
The prohibitions cover expensive weddings including extravagant expenses and excessive bridal trousseau, the wearing of revealing clothes, indecent music locally called Wazigidi, and public performances by DJs.
The Hisbah board also banned overloading and the use of loudspeakers or amplifiers by commercial tricycle operators, indecent haircuts.
The state Commander of the Board, Malam Usman Abdullahi Jatau, who addressed journalists in his office on Monday on the development, urged the people to support the measures.
According to him, the prohibitions are necessary measures to promote good morals across Sokoto State.
Some residents have welcomed the development, saying that the move would curb obnoxious excesses during marriages, naming ceremonies, and other social events, while encouraging more spinsters constrained by some obnoxious practices, to marry.
They advised that the ban be strictly enforced across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state, and the enforcement cut across all social strata of the society, “not minding whose ox is gored.”
