Strengthen democratic institutions to tackle regional challenges – Barau

The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has called for sustained efforts to strengthen democratic institutions across West Africa to address emerging political and security challenges.

Barau made the call on Thursday while speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the 2026 forum of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre.
The forum, themed “51 years of Nigeria’s role in deepening Democratic Stability in ECOWAS,” brought together media professionals, lawmakers, diplomats and other stakeholders.

The lawmaker, who also serves as First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, noted that although progress has been made in democratic governance within the sub-region, more work is required to consolidate gains.

He stressed that legislatures play a key role in sustaining democracy through accountability, transparency and adherence to constitutional order.

Barau further assured that Nigeria’s National Assembly would continue to promote policies and legislative initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic governance and regional cooperation.

According to him, Nigeria must continue to demonstrate leadership within ECOWAS by supporting democratic stability and fostering collaboration among member states.

He added that the true test of democracy lies in its ability to improve the welfare of citizens.

The Deputy Senate President also tasked the media with shaping a positive and accurate global narrative about Africa, warning against the dangers of misinformation.

He emphasised that credible journalism remains vital to preserving democratic culture and ensuring informed public discourse.

Barau concluded that strengthening democratic institutions is a continuous responsibility, urging stakeholders across the region to remain committed to peace, inclusiveness and sustainable development.
