In a significant breakthrough, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) management and the agency-based unions have signed a joint agreement, averting a planned strike action scheduled to commence on February 4, 2025.
NiMet and the agency-based unions; National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), and Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), have reached an agreement to postpone planned strike action by the unions till further notice
The agreement, reached after a series of negotiations, recognizes that miscommunication contributed to the delay in addressing union concerns and commits both parties to strengthening consultation and engagement channels.
According to Prof. Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, the management is committed to championing workers’ welfare within realistic economic conditions. Anosike expressed appreciation for the efforts of the National Officers of NiMet agency-based unions and the input of the branches, acknowledging that while there is still work to be done, the postponement of the strike action allows management to continue pursuing necessary approvals from the federal government.
The President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Comrade Benjamin Nnabue, who led the negotiations on behalf of the unions, praised the efforts of all parties involved in reaching the agreement.
The joint agreement outlines timelines for addressing various issues raised by the unions, including staff welfare and promotions. Both parties have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a progressive partnership that enhances industrial peace, promotes the welfare of NiMet staff, and advances the agency’s goals.
As a gesture of goodwill, the unions have agreed to postpone the planned industrial action until further notice, pending consultation with their relevant organs.
