A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and Director-General of the Confederation of APC Support Groups, Professor Kailani Muhammad, has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure full transparency in the management of funds saved from the removal of petrol subsidy.
Muhammad made the call in an open letter addressed to the President and made available to journalists on Monday.
He acknowledged the administration’s “political boldness” in implementing difficult reforms, particularly the removal of the petroleum subsidy, noting that past governments had avoided the decision despite its fiscal implications.
“Such a decision required political courage, and many Nigerians recognise the weight of that responsibility,” he said.
The APC support group leader, however, stressed that bold reforms must be matched with accountability.
“The removal of the subsidy was justified on the grounds that it would free significant national resources for development and economic restructuring. Nigerians therefore deserve full transparency regarding the management of the funds saved from this policy,” he stated.
He said citizens were asking legitimate questions about how the savings were being utilised.
“Where are the resources saved from the subsidy removal being directed? How are these funds being invested to improve infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social welfare? What safeguards are in place to prevent mismanagement or corruption?” he queried.
Muhammad noted that transparency was critical to rebuilding public trust and sustaining confidence in the government’s economic reforms.
On security, he described the situation as an urgent national concern, despite efforts by security agencies.
“Many Nigerians still live with uncertainty and fear, while countless families have been displaced by violence. The fight against terrorism must remain a top priority,” he said.
He called for strengthened intelligence coordination and improved support for security institutions to tackle insecurity across the country.
Speaking on the economy, Muhammad highlighted the untapped potential of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, urging the government to address illegal mining and weak regulation.
“A transparent and well-regulated framework could generate employment, stimulate regional development, and provide sustainable revenue,” he added.
He also raised concerns over rising poverty levels, noting that increasing food prices, transport costs and living expenses were placing heavy burdens on citizens.
“While reforms may bring temporary hardship, the true measure of success must be the improvement of the people’s welfare,” he said.
Muhammad urged the government to implement policies that would reduce poverty, create jobs and strengthen social safety nets.
He further called for recognition of APC members and support groups who contributed to the party’s victory in the 2023 elections.
“Appointing qualified individuals who demonstrated loyalty and service will strengthen the political foundation of the administration, provided merit and integrity remain the guiding principles,” he said.
The APC chieftain emphasised that leadership at this critical time required openness, fairness and a strong national purpose.
“History will judge every administration not by the power it held but by the lives it improved,” he added.
