A coalition of friends, colleagues and associates has announced plans to hold a symposium and book launch in honour of late Comrade Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed, a renowned Nigerian progressive intellectual and social justice advocate.
The event, scheduled for April 29, 2026, in Abuja, is aimed at celebrating the life, contributions and enduring legacy of Mohammed, who passed away on December 11, 2025.
The organisers described the late scholar as a committed patriot and a key figure in Nigeria’s socialist movement, noting that his career spanned notable institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
They said Mohammed remained a consistent advocate for academic freedom, gender equality and Africa’s transformation throughout his lifetime.
According to the statement, the memorial event will highlight his contributions to progressive causes, including his involvement in the Movement for Progressive Nigeria, the anti-apartheid struggle, his role as a founding member of Women in Nigeria (WIN), and his leadership within the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The symposium, themed “Scholars and the Social Question in Nigeria: Reflections on the Life of A.S. Mohammed,” will be chaired by Yahaya Abdullahi. Panelists expected at the event include Yusuf Bangura, Jibrin Ibrahim, Aliyah Adamu Ahmad and Julie Sanda.
The event will also feature the launch of Mohammed’s book titled The Satiru Revolt of Peasants and Slaves in Sokoto, 1906. The session will be chaired by former Sokoto State Governor, Yahaya Abdulkarim, while M. J. Kuna will review the publication.
In addition, proceeds from the book launch will be used to support an endowment fund established in honour of the late intellectual, aimed at assisting his family and sustaining the causes he championed.
A biographical tribute will be delivered by J. Maina, highlighting Mohammed’s lifelong commitment to social justice and nation-building.
The event is scheduled to hold at BON Elvis Hotel, Wuse 2, Abuja, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Organisers have invited members of the public, academia, civil society, labour organisations and the media to attend, noting that the occasion will provide an opportunity to reflect on the late Mohammed’s contributions and reinforce the ideals he stood for.
