Taraba Varsity ASUU Gives Gov Kefas 14-Day Ultimatum Over Unimplemented Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) Branch, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Taraba State Government and the university management to implement outstanding provisions of the ASUU/FGN 2025 Agreement or face industrial action.

The union gave the ultimatum following a resolution reached at its congress meeting held on August 13, 2026.

In a statement issued by the ASUU-TSU Branch Chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, the union said the ultimatum would run from August 13 to August 26, 2026.

Mbave said the decision followed concerns over the continued non-implementation of applicable provisions of the agreement despite previous communications by ASUU and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to the university administration, Governing Council and Taraba State Government.

According to him, the union has engaged the government and exercised considerable restraint in the interest of industrial peace, academic stability and uninterrupted academic activities at the university.

He, however, warned that the union’s restraint should not be interpreted as acceptance of further delays or abandonment of its members’ legitimate entitlements.

“Following extensive deliberations, Congress expressed grave concern over the continued failure of Taraba State Government to implement the applicable provisions of the Agreement, notwithstanding previous official communications by ASUU and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to the University Administration, the Governing Council and the Taraba State Government,” the statement said.

The union described the continued non-implementation of the agreement as unacceptable and inconsistent with the principles of good-faith negotiation, collective bargaining and established industrial relations practices.

It said agreements reached through recognised negotiation processes should be honoured and implemented within the stipulated or otherwise reasonable timeframe.

ASUU’s Demands

The ASUU-TSU branch is demanding:

The immediate and full implementation of all applicable outstanding provisions of the ASUU/FGN 2025 Agreement.

Payment of all applicable arrears and financial entitlements accruing to its members from January 2026 to date.

The union stressed that the 14-day ultimatum was a formal demand for compliance and implementation, rather than an invitation for another round of open-ended consultations.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the issuance of this ultimatum constitutes a formal demand for compliance and implementation. It is not an invitation to commence another round of open-ended consultations, nor does it constitute a request for further assurances, promises or undertakings unsupported by concrete implementation,” it said.

The union urged the Taraba State Government, the university’s Governing Council and the management to treat the matter with urgency and ensure full compliance within the stipulated period to prevent further escalation of the dispute.

ASUU-TSU also appealed to members of the public and other stakeholders to prevail on the government to implement the outstanding provisions of the ASUU/FGN 2025 Agreement.

The union warned that failure to meet its demands by August 26 could lead to further action, including industrial action.
