A 300-level student of University of Benin reportedly shot dead by yet to be identified gunmen on Tuesday night, has heightened tension at the two campuses of the ivory tower.
The deceased, identified as James, an undergraduate in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education was allegedly killed at Ekosodin Community, few metres away from the school, shortly after he finished watching a match at a viewing centre.
The death of the student, who was clad in white T-Shirt and lemon-coloured knickers, occurred barely one week after a 300-level student of the school was murdered at its Ugbowo campus, which the school authorities say investigation has commenced.
The stone-dead body of James was sighted in a white-coloured police Hilux van at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) yesterday morning.
Reports have it that the recent killing may not be unconnected to an ongoing cult war in the school, according to some students of the institution.
When contacted on phone, UNIBEN’s Public Relations Officer, Barrister Harrison Osarenren, promised to make an enquiry into the alleged murder and call back. But as at the time of filling this report, he was yet to call back.
Meanwhile, no fewer than 10 university students travelling to Bayelsa from Lagos and Ibadan were Tuesday night involved in a multiple motor accident along Ore-Benin highway, between Okada and Ogbemudia farm.
The accident involved an articulated truck and two commercial buses belonging to Onitsha-based Cross Country and Warri-based Agofure Motors.
The students, who were going for orientation for the Batch-C of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in Bayelsa state were travelling in a 15-seater Cross Country bus.
It was gathered that the bus, apparently on top speed, rammed into a moving articulated truck in the front, while the bus directly behind it (Agofure Motors) also rammed into the Cross Country bus.
Six of the Corps members-to be, who sustained varying but serious degrees of injuries, were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Authorities of the Orientation camp of the NYSC in Bayelsa state have been notified of the incident.
