The renaissance of Abuja: Inside Wike’s infrastructural revolution 50 years after creation

Half a century after the blueprint for Nigeria’s capital city was first conceived, Abuja is undergoing a sweeping structural rebirth. On a Friday evening in the nation’s capital, a special “thank you” dinner brought together the country’s political elite to celebrate an unusual administrative feat: the successful inauguration of 31 major infrastructure projects in just 28 days.
Glaringly, the breakneck pace of development has caught the attention of the presidency.
Delivering remarks on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio noted that 50 years after its initial creation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is finally changing for the better under its current minister, Nyesom Wike.
“Leadership is not measured by how loudly one announces plans, but how clearly the people can see the results of the plans. Every new road shortens a journey; every new bridge connects friendship, love, unity, and opportunity for Nigerians,” President Tinubu stated.
The numbers behind the transformation
The 31 projects completed represent the crescendo of a three-year acceleration in construction and public works across the territory. Since the current administration took office, the completion rate of urban infrastructure has scaled up significantly year-over-year.
According to the FCT Administration, roughly 70% of these completed works were legacy, long-abandoned projects that had been revived. And the Inner Southern Expressway (OSEX) remains the only major ongoing project awaiting completion.

Unlocking the Bureaucracy:
When Nyesom Wike assumed office as FCT Minister in August 2023 alongside the Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, he inherited a deeply demoralized workforce. Civil servants lacked the incentive to drive the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
To fix the structural engine of the FCT, the FCTA secured presidential approval for two radical changes:
The FCT Civil Service Commission – for the first time, career civil servants within the FCT administration could rise to the pinnacle of their careers, filling positions as Permanent Secretaries and Head of Civil Service.
Exiting the Treasury Single Account (TSA): By legally pulling the FCT out of the restrictive TSA framework, the administration unlocked the ability to collaborate with commercial banks, securing the liquid capital necessary to cash-flow projects without bureaucratic delays.
Contractors have felt the immediate impact of these financial reforms. Speaking on behalf of the engineering firms on-site, Dr. Peer Lubasch, Managing Director of Julius Berger, quipped that construction crews have witnessed “more ribbon-cutting ceremonies in the past days than in previous years,” praising the sustained investment turning Abuja into a world-class, purpose-built capital.

A rare consensus across party lines
The sheer volume of visible infrastructure has generated a rare consensus among past and present leaders, with House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas openly labeling Wike as the “best performing minister of the FCT” in the city’s history.
Perhaps the strongest vote of confidence came from Aliyu Modibbo, a former FCT Minister himself and current Special Adviser to the President. Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima at the dinner, Modibbo looked toward the political horizon, suggesting that Wike’s infrastructural footprint warrants an extended stay in office.
“Four years is simply not enough to complete what you have started,” Modibbo stated, expressing optimism for Wike’s continuity into a second ministerial tenure.
As Abuja approaches its golden jubilee, the current construction boom serves as a powerful reminder of what happens when clear vision aligns with institutional determination. For the residents navigating the newly paved corridors of the capital, the government is finally working one completed road at a time.
