Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for urgent investment in Nigeria’s tourism sector to attract foreign capital and accelerate economic growth.

Obasanjo made the call on Wednesday in Bauchi while delivering a keynote address at the Bauchi State International Business and Investment Summit, where he also inaugurated the newly constructed Ahmadu Bello International Conference Centre.

Describing the facility as a “symbol of progress under Governor Bala Mohammed’s visionary and performing administration,” Obasanjo said it would serve as a hub for dialogue, investment discussions and tourism promotion.

“We need to mobilise investment from local and international sources.

“No nation can live in isolation without engaging meaningfully with the rest of the world.”

The former president commended Governor Mohammed’s commitment to infrastructure development, which he said would boost Bauchi’s capacity to host international events and position the state as a prime destination for investors.

“Facilities like this promote unity and economic growth. Governor, let me say this — I will go anywhere with you to get investments for Bauchi State,” he added.

Obasanjo also praised the decision to name the centre after the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, describing the Sardauna of Sokoto as “one of the greatest Nigerians in our history.”

In his welcome address, Governor Bala Mohammed expressed gratitude for Obasanjo’s support and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to projects that promote education, tourism and socioeconomic development.

He said the new conference centre would serve as a multipurpose venue for local and international events, including academic gatherings, business summits and cultural exhibitions.

“Our vision is to transform Bauchi into a hub for dialogue, innovation and investment in Northern Nigeria. Any investor who comes here will enjoy the full support of the state government,” Mohammed assured.
