A horrific tragedy incident has thrown the Gagi Area of the Sokoto metropolis into mourning, following the sudden and tragic death of a prominent traditional title holder, Alhaji Bello Hassan, the Magajin Garin Gagi.
The fatal collision occurred on Wednesday within the Sokoto South Local Government Area when a young motorist allegedly lost control of his vehicle and crushed the community leader.
According to eyewitnesses and local intelligence, the tragedy unfolded while the suspect and his brother were reportedly drag-racing separate vehicles at high speeds.
It was revealed that the duo were en route to a horse-racing event organized on the outskirts of Gagi town.
Compounding the local shock, investigations revealed that both the suspect and his brother are the sons of another high-ranking traditional title holder in the state, Alhaji Bello Mayana, the Mayanan Sokoto.
The impact of the crash was described by onlookers as exceptionally gruesome, leaving the body of the deceased heavily mutilated and severed into three parts.
Alhaji Hassan was reportedly returning home from his farm when he was struck.
Following the incident, operatives from the Unguwar Rogo Police Division in Sokoto city arrived at the scene to evacuate the fragmented remains to a nearby hospital.
The body was later released to the grieving family on Wednesday for burial, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Reacting to the heartbreaking loss, the District Head of Gagi (Sarkin Yakin Gagi), Alhaji Sani Umar Jabbi, vehemently condemned the alleged reckless behavior that led to the incident.
He expressed deep regret over the avoidable tragedy and issued a stern call to authorities to ensure absolute justice is served for the family of the deceased.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, stated that law enforcement has taken swift action.
“The case is currently at the Unguwar Rogo Division, and it will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a discreet and thorough investigation,” Rufai assured.
