The Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers has extended its strike action scheduled to take effect on 28th of this month by one month, to allow for further deliberations.

The union had issued a 21-day ultimatum to the management, to press home staff legitimate welfare as a result of industrial dispute between the union and the management of the corporation.

But the Joint Central Working Committee of Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NUR) and the Senior Staff Association (SSA) of Nigerian Railway Corporation yesterday said it temporarily suspended their nationwide industrial action, which was to commence on July 28, 2014 at the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum.

The board Chairman of the corporation, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur described the decision of the union as a show of understanding and maturity, affirming that dialogue remained the only civilized way of setting industrial disputes and commended the union members for allowing dialogue to take place in the process of reconciliation.

Tukur had set-up a committee few weeks ago to meet with both the management and union members, to find the causes and recommend means of resolving the industrial dispute.

The SSA President-General said, “We have temporarily put our industrial action on hold and have graciously given the board one month time space counting from July 30, so that the Chairman could have enough time to help in resolving our articulated demands, that have been lying before the management for over a year now”.
