Two Katsina students win silver at global competition
Two students of Government College Funtua in Katsina State have won silver medal in Tunisia at one of the biggest international science fairs in Africa, the I-Fest² Projects Competition 2026, organised by the Association for the Future of Sciences and Technology.
The International Festival of Engineering Science and Technology I-Fest² Projects Competition 2026 brought together over 1,200 students from 40 countries who presented 450 projects in eight categories.
It is the 17th edition organised by ATAST to showcase some of the brightest young minds in science, technology, and innovation from across the globe.
The students, Abdullahi Sani Matoya and Abubakar Abdullahi alongside their taacher Malam Yazid Ahmed, emerged as the Second Overall Best in Environmental Science category.
Their project, “Biogas Production Using Floating Macrophytes with the Use of a Special Boat,” converts aquatic plants such as water hyacinth into clean energy.
This win highlighted the innovative efforts of Nigerian youth in addressing global environmental challenges through sustainable waste-to-energy solutions, Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda said while congratulating the students.
“This achievement proves that our education reforms are bringing real results. Our young people have the talent and innovation to compete with the best in the world,” he said while commending them for making Katsina State and Nigeria proud.
“When we invest in education, when we support our students and teachers, we create champions. These young people have shown that investment in quality education pays off.”
The governor also praised their teacher, Yazid Ahmed, for guiding the students to success, while encouraging other students to aim for excellence in their chosen fields.
