Tragedy struck in Ungushi village, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Sunday, when suspected Lakurawa terrorists attacked the community, killing two residents.
The attackers were said to have stormed the community in the morning, surrounding the village and opening fire on residents, causing panic and fear.
Residents said local vigilantes quickly mobilized and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted for over an hour, and successfully repelled them.
The two victims were identified as Ali Kaurar Yaku Marshall and Lukman Bawa, a welder.
A vigilante member, Mustapha Auwalu, was also shot in the right leg during the confrontation.
He was taken to the General Hospital where medical personnel reportedly removed the bullet.
Residents also claimed that three of the suspected Lakurawa fighters were killed by vigilantes during the exchange of fire.
The spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, has confirmed the incident, however promising to provide details of the dastardly attack in due course.
“The incident has been reported by the DPO in the area. We are still awaiting details of the incident as of the time of filing this report,” Rufai said.
The attack has renewed fears among residents of Ungushi and surrounding communities, who have called for urgent intervention by the government and increased deployment of security personnel, as well as intensified patrols to prevent further attacks.
