Kaduna State has joined the global community in celebrating World Press Freedom Day 2026, with this year’s theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace,” inspired by reflections from the UNESCO conference held in Lusaka, Zambia.

The 2026 theme emphasized the crucial role of a free, responsible, and independent media in fostering peace, defending human rights, and supporting sustainable development, especially amid increasing threats to free expression and the credibility of information.

In Nigeria, particularly in Kaduna State, the media remains a fundamental pillar of democratic governance, informing the public, guiding debate, and ensuring accountability.

The government of His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, affirms its ongoing commitment to upholding the constitutional right to press freedom and fostering an environment where journalists can work responsibly without undue interference.

Speaking on the occasion, the Honorable Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said Governor Uba Sani’s dedication to press freedom reflects a strong belief that a free, responsible, and trustworthy media is vital for peace, good governance, and democratic stability.

“Governor Uba Sani’s dedication to press freedom demonstrates a strong belief that a free, responsible, and trustworthy media is essential for peace, good governance, and democratic stability, as well as an informed and engaged society,” Maiyaki stated.

The Commissioner highlighted that, at a time when misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust, social unity, and national security, the importance of ethical, accurate, and responsible journalism has never been greater.

“As misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust and national cohesion, ethical, accurate, and professional journalism remains non-negotiable, and Kaduna State will continue to support journalists while promoting integrity and accountability in the media,” he said.

As the international community advocates for stronger protections for journalists and the preservation of civic space, Kaduna State reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding media professionals, promoting professionalism, fact-checking, and adherence to ethical standards.

Maiyaki announced that the Ministry of Information and Culture will continue working closely with media partners, support training programs, and implement initiatives to fight misinformation while reinforcing journalism’s credibility.

He urged all stakeholders to uphold the principles of truth, responsibility, and mutual respect as the state observes the day, emphasizing that these are essential for a peaceful, informed, and democratic society.
