A fresh political controversy erupted on Monday after the member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, accused operatives of the Imo State Police Command’s Tiger Base unit of abducting and torturing his constituents in an alleged attempt to implicate him in fabricated criminal offences.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the outspoken federal lawmaker alleged that some officers attached to the Tiger Base/Violent Crime Response Unit had turned the police into what he described as “a private army” used to intimidate opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, several of his constituents were unlawfully arrested, tortured and coerced into making false statements linking him to terrorism, gun-running and murder allegations.
“Imo police are abducting my constituents and torturing them in a bid to frame me with frivolous criminal allegations, terrorism, gun-running and murder,” Ugochinyere alleged.
He further claimed that one of the detained persons had allegedly died in custody, while others remained under severe torture.
The lawmaker called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission to immediately investigate the activities of the officers involved, including operatives allegedly linked to the controversial Tiger Base unit.
Ugochinyere also accused unnamed political actors of orchestrating a judicial conspiracy aimed at deregistering opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
He listed the African Democratic Congress, Accord Party, Action Peoples Party and the Zenith Labour Party among parties allegedly targeted in the suit.
According to him, the move was designed to weaken the opposition and prevent some candidates, including Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, from participating in future elections.
Describing the development as “an invitation to anarchy,” the federal lawmaker warned that any attempt to deregister opposition parties close to an election period could trigger nationwide political unrest.
“You cannot deregister political parties a few months to elections and expect Nigerians to fold their arms. You are playing with fire,” he said.
Ugochinyere, however, commended the Court of Appeal for halting proceedings in the controversial suit seeking the deregistration of political parties.
He praised Justices Danjuma, Banjoko and Onyewunmi for granting a stay of proceedings against Justice Lifu of the Federal High Court, whom he accused of handling the matter in a manner that raised “serious suspicion.”
Citing Section 225A of the Nigerian Constitution, the lawmaker argued that political parties that had won elective positions could not be deregistered.
“The Constitution is clear. Once a party wins even one councillorship seat, deregistration does not arise,” he stated.
He also referenced judgments delivered by Federal High Courts in Uyo and Awka, alongside decisions of the Court of Appeal, which he said affirmed the constitutional protection of political parties that had met the electoral threshold.
On the controversy surrounding the electoral timetable, Ugochinyere urged the Independent National Electoral Commission not to challenge a recent Federal High Court judgment that adjusted aspects of the timetable to broaden political participation.
He praised Justice M.G. Umar for what he described as a courageous interpretation of the Constitution, warning that any appeal could create uncertainty and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
“The country cannot afford confusion at this critical moment,” he said.
In his concluding remarks, the lawmaker appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the National Judicial Council and security agencies to protect democratic institutions from political interference and abuse.
“Democracy is about participation, not exclusion,” Ugochinyere stated.
“You don’t claim to be popular while running around disqualifying opponents, deregistering parties and framing critics with criminal allegations.”
