The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Hajiya Amina Mohammed, has commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano state, for his remarkable strides in enhancing social development and promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mrs. Mohammed who was in Kano to offer condolences to the government and people of the state over the passing of two prominent elder statesmen — Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata and former President Muhammadu Buhari, said she was impressed with the development achievements of the governor.

In a statement on Sunday, the Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House said during her visit, the UN chieftain lauded several of Governor Yusuf’s people oriented initiatives, particularly those that aligned with global sustainable development targets.

Dawakin -Tofa listed some of the projects to include; the solarization of Kano’s streets, the establishment of the Kano Centre for Disease Control (the first of its kind created by any state government in Nigeria), and efforts to expand health coverage for the informal sector through the state insurance scheme, amongst many others.

“She also praised the creation of the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, as well as the renaming and repositioning of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, all of which reflect the government’s commitment to climate action and sustainability.

“Mrs. Mohammed noted that her visit was not only to condole but also to deepen advocacy on the SDGs and strengthen collaboration with Kano State”.

According to the statement, Hajiya Amina also informed the governor about the upcoming UN Business and Investment Forum and expressed appreciation for his dedication to women’s empowerment, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
