Universities to curb purchase of honorary degrees by undeserving politicians, businessmen – VC

Date:

From Yakubu Mustapha, Minna

Vice Chancellor of the Ibrahim Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai, Professor Ibrahim Kolo has stated that the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities has taken appropriate measures to curb the purchase of honorary degrees by politicians and businessmen who do not deserve such honour.

Professor Kolo said while speaking with journalists in Minna yesterday, that the issue has been discussed at the meeting of the committee held in Keffi recently.

“It was brought to the attention of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities that the manner in which some universities were beginning to award degrees to those who do not deserve them was becoming unbecoming. In other words people were being given awards not for their tangible contributions to the university or the society but on the basis of what they can offer to the university”, he said.

He noted that the committee wanted to stop such universities from falling into the abuse of the award of Doctorate Degrees, adding that

“when somebody is awarded a doctorate degree in the university it should be in recognition of his selfless service and tangible contribution and not necessarily money, that individual has given to the university”.

Prof. Kolo, while speaking on why Nigeria Universities are rated low in comparison with other universities in the world stated that universities takes time to grow, as most of the world class universities are over 400 years old and have developed over the period.
