US lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to back a 100% freeze on aid to Nigeria.
The lawmakers passed an amendment to the fiscal 2027 State Department spending bill that withholds all American assistance until the Nigerian government shows measurable progress in stopping violence, protecting vulnerable communities, and holding attackers accountable.
The amendment, sponsored by Florida Representative Gregory Steube, was adopted by a voice vote.
It increases a previous proposal that only sought to withhold half of the funds.
Lawmakers argued that keeping half the funding essentially rewarded the Nigerian government for failing to protect its citizens and minorities.
While the amendment has passed the House, it is not yet law. It now faces the legislative process in the Senate and final negotiations before taking effect.
