The Late Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni has been described as one of the most detribalized Nigerians and an “angel in army uniform” who touched many lives.

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 election, Prince Adewole Adebayo made this remark in Abuja at the weekend when he led other chieftains of the party on a condolence visit to Useni’s family.

Adebayo described Useni as an officer who had a lifelong of service; adding that he was devoted to justice and helping people, irrespective of their political, religious, or ethnic background.

According to him, Useni, who served as Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister during military administration of Late Gen. Sani Abacha, always put the interest of the people at the forefront.

Adebayo further praised Useni for making Abuja a city for the people, adding that he allocated land to even small traders and also relocated, instead of demolishing homes in disadvantaged areas.

“During military rule, he transformed Abuja into the city of the people. Politicians today must ensure it remains a city for the people, not just the government,” Adebayo said.

He noted that when the Nigerian Head of State died in 1998, Useni was the most senior officer but did not politicize the situation or seek personal advantage.

In his remarks, the National Chairman of the SDP, Shehu Gabam described the late General as a great leader with an outstanding legacy; whose death remains a national loss.
