The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) has instructed its commanders across Kaduna State to increase surveillance, especially in communities bordering Plateau State, following a recent surge in killings.
The Commander-General of the VGN, Navy Captain Umar Abubakar Bakori, issued the directive during a one-day awareness workshop attended by commanders from all 23 local government areas of the state.
Bakori highlighted the importance of adopting effective early warning and quick response strategies to prevent further escalation of violence.
“Our operatives must remain alert and proactive, reporting any suspicious movement to security agencies without delay, especially in border communities vulnerable to security threats,” he said.
The VGN, with its strong grassroots presence, is a vital partner in supporting both state and federal governments in tackling insecurity, which continues to impact key sectors including education, agriculture, and overall socio-economic development.
Bakori noted that the organization’s efforts are hindered by a lack of resources and called on the government and well-meaning individuals to provide logistical support, including vehicles and operational tools, to increase its effectiveness.
“Vigilante members are at the frontline of community security. With proper support, we can significantly reduce criminal activities and restore peace across affected areas,” Bakori stated.
A VGN commander from Southern Kaduna, who requested anonymity, reaffirmed the group’s dedication to supporting government efforts to combat banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.
He explained that members serve voluntarily without pay and appealed for more support to enable them to perform their duties more effectively.
