Students of the Federal University of Petroleum Effurun (FUPRE), Delta State on Monday, took to the streets and barricaded East West road from the Warri axis, protesting over the increment in the institution’s student charges.

The protest which started peacefully in the institution’s premises later snowballed into blockage of the ever busy road after the management and the student’s representative dialogue ended deadlock.

The student carried placards with various inscriptions like: this is FUPRE 1st in Africa not 1st in Warri, they want to spoil your government, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GEJ.” “There is APC in our school”, Goodluck come and help,” “Jonathan you increase our school fees among others.

Mr. Valentine Ekanem, vice President of the FUPRE student Union Government (SUG) told newsmen that they would continue to barricade the road until the student charges were reduced.

According to him, the old students were to pay N55,000 as against N26,400 they were paying before, adding that new student charges was increased from 46,000 to N90,000.

“We cannot afford this astronomical increase in the student charges.

They also increase the acceptance fee for the new students from N7,000 to N30,000, hostel fee from N10,000 to N50,000. The management said they want to use the money to develop the institution,” he said.
