The Federal Government has identified inability of most farmers to write a good business proposal as the main reason why they cannot access credit facilities in the country.
Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Edo State, Mr. Omoragbon Wellington dropped the hint at the 6th anniversary celebration and flag-off of 2018 farming season by cocoa farmers in the state.
The theme of the anniversary was : “Harnessing the power of Agricultural Cooperatives for Food Security and sustainable livelihoods.”
Omoragbon, noted that poor record keeping and financial management as well as the inability for most farmers to organise themselves have hindered them from achieving their potentials optimally.
He revealed that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Edo state will soon take delivery of farming implements and other farming inputs for genuine farmers in the state.
According to him, “the major problem we have is the inability of farmers to organize themselves as a group.
“Most farmers do not know how to write good proposals. It is difficult for them to get loans or credit facilities,” he said.
President, Forum of Farmers Business School Multipurpose Cooperative Union Limited programme, Edo state Chapter, Frederick Thomas, tasked the state government to assist the group with the construction of a standard warehousing facilities.
He suggested that the warehouses should be sited at three strategic locations in the state, adding that it would help to promote business, job creation, prosperity and food security.
The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural resources, Monday Osaigbovo, said the government has taken steps to resolve farmers/herders clashes.
He dismissed calls to fight herdsmen in the state.
