The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has made a strong case for the continuity of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, declaring that the President’s “courageous leadership” and massive infrastructure drive are successfully bridging Nigeria’s historic development gaps.
Speaking on Saturday at the 36th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt, Wike argued that the scale of ongoing national projects warrants sustained political commitment rather than leadership interruption.
Delivering a lecture titled “Leadership and Infrastructure Development in Nigeria: Lessons for Future Leaders,” the former Rivers State governor insisted that infrastructure remains the ultimate yardstick for measuring leadership effectiveness.
“If this trajectory is to be consolidated, deepened, and translated into lasting national outcomes, it requires not interruption in leadership, but continuity; not hesitation, but sustained commitment,” Wike stated.
He fiercely defended the administration’s controversial economic policies, most notably the removal of the petrol subsidy.
While acknowledging that transformative leadership requires choosing “long-term stability over short-term comfort,” he argued that the subsidy removal has freed up critical fiscal space, allowing federal and state governments to aggressively fund national development.
According to the him, President Tinubu has shown an uncommon willingness to confront entrenched challenges and mobilize the national resources necessary to reshape Nigeria’s economic landscape.
Rather than executing isolated projects, Wike noted that the current administration has injected strategic urgency into both inherited and fresh initiatives, integrating them into a cohesive national framework.
“The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, Abuja-Kano Road, and the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railway corridor.
“The Siemens-partnered Presidential Power Initiative, mass metering schemes, and forward-looking green interventions like the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative.
“Broad expansion of digital broadband, security architecture, and the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to secure access to higher education,” he stated.
While conceding that infrastructure gestation periods are long and their benefits are not always felt immediately, he cautioned that Nigeria cannot achieve its economic aspirations without sustained investments in roads, power, healthcare, and education.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to look past immediate discomforts and support the administration’s long-term vision, emphasizing that a nation’s progress is ultimately tied to the quality of its infrastructure and the political will of its leaders.
