The political landscape of Rivers State has undergone a massive transformation from its violent past into a unified front capable of delivering sustainable peace and development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This assertion was made on Saturday by Ambassador Desmond Akawor, the Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Rivers State.
Speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the high-profile Rainbow Coalition Luncheon for 2027 candidates held in Port Harcourt, Akawor described the current cross-party convergence as a masterclass in “political engineering.”
Reflecting on the state’s dark history of electoral violence, Ambassador Akawor recalled an era where political seasons were characterized by fear, forced disappearances, and bloodshed.
”What has happened today is what you may call political engineering.
“You remember we used to have a name called ‘Rivers of Blood,’ because during elections, even primaries, people would disappear from the state for the fear of being killed”, Akawor stated.
He noted that the narrative changed entirely when FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, stepped forward like the biblical figure answering the call, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?”
According to Akawor, Wike’s visionary leadership led to the creation of the Rivers Rainbow Coalition, an alliance that has successfully brought five distinct political parties under one roof to dine, wine, and strategize as one people.
This unity, Akawor emphasized, guarantees that the upcoming elections will be free, fair, and smooth sailing.
”Never again shall we be called Rivers of Blood; we are going to be asking for Rivers of Peace.
“Rivers will, once again, want to compete with Lagos,” he added.
Ambassador Akawor poured encomiums on Wike, describing him as a true “apostle” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He praised the FCT Minister for fully embracing and operationalizing the President’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda in Rivers State.
To drive home the federal government’s agenda, the coalition announced a massive organizational rollout across the state.
According him, the ambassadors have been fully empowered and equipped with vehicles/buses to mobilize the grassroots.
The the Renewed Hope Ambassadors has successfully inaugurated 319 Ward Coordinators across Rivers State, tasked with spreading the achievements and vision of President Tinubu.
Akawor thanked the President for appointing Wike as FCT Minister—joking that the critical role essentially gives Rivers people an “additional state”—and noted that numerous Rivers indigenes are now gainfully employed in Abuja courtesy of that alliance.
When pressed on the tangible benefits of the alliance to the ordinary citizens of Rivers State, Ambassador Akawor provided a robust scorecard of landmark infrastructural projects executed under President Tinubu’s administration, driven by agencies like the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
