Efforts to reach a consensus among governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State have collapsed, prompting former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Usman Baba Alkali, to formally enter the race.
Speaking with journalists in Damaturu on Sunday, Alkali confirmed that four of his fellow aspirants had already purchased their nomination forms, signaling a breakdown of all prior agreements.
“I therefore obtained the form to join the movement. No one has ever shown me where to sign or even asked me to speak. That is why I tell you that the consensus arrangement has failed,” Alkali said.
He clarified his understanding of the party’s consensus model, stating: “I clearly understood what the national president of our party said—that consensus means the candidates should unite and agree to support one among them.
“That is the meaning of consensus. Now that this has not happened in Yobe, I have decided to go ahead with my ambition.” he insisted.
The former police chief also disclosed that he arrived in Damaturu over the weekend to verify the validity of his forms, adding that he had to consult party rules and local authorities before proceeding.
When asked if he would step down should party leaders ask him to back another candidate, Alkali responded cautiously: “I would, if I agree to the terms.”
He urged his supporters to remain steadfast, saying they should stand by him through the primary election, regardless of whether it holds as scheduled or not.
