Zuru hospital deaths: Witnesses testify as probe panel begins sitting
The probe panel set up by the Kebbi state government to investigate circumstances leading to the death of two sisters at the General Hospital Zuru, on Monday received testimonies from the key witnesses involved in the matter.
The sitting which took place at the Hospital, featured the key witnesses including hospital staff and parents of the deceased young girls.
Medical staff including the Principal Medical Officer, Dr Thomas Gode, the Medical Officer, Dr Mohammed Fakai as well as the nurses on duty from the day the girls were admitted up to the third day of their admission when they died, appeared before the panel and were cross examined.
The parents of the girls headed by Ibrahim Abdullahi Shuni, their father and mother as well as other family members also gave evidences on what transpired within the period.
As part of its assignment, the committee also met with staff members of the Hospital, who took turns to highlight the unpalatable consequences of communication gap among the staff members.
They highlighted the need to work as a team and the modesty of reaching out to one another in critical matters of saving lives.
The Chairman of the panel and Commissioner of Information, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, called on the staff to work according to the ethics of the medical profession.
He said they must avoid mistakes that could imperil lives or cause serious health problems
Health Commissioner Alhaji Ismaila Yakubu Augie also called for more synergy and cooperation between the various strata of the profession in order to provide first class health services for the good of the state.
Other members of the committee who spoke included the Provost of the Kauran Gwandu College of Nursing Sciences Ambursa, Dr. Murtala Musa Muhammed; Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Comrade Kelani Abdulwaliyyi; the Director Inspectorate Dr. Lawan Kangiwa and the Director of Nursing Sevices Alhaji Hantsi Garba.
The committee will receive testimonies from more witnesses on Tuesday.
