2 mechanics docked for theft

The police have arraigned two mechanics, James Oko and Onyeamama Onyeachioma, in a Senior Magistrates’ court in Karu, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), charged with stealing three Toyota Camry car.

Oko and Onyeachioma, who are both residents in Ebonyi, were arraigned before Senior Magistrate Aminu Abdullahi on two counts of criminal conspiracy and car theft.

The prosecutor, Insp. Adams Peter, told the court that the police got a call from a source that a robbery was in progress at the Federal Housing Authority in Lugbe, Abuja, on December 7.

He said the accused were in possession of the three stolen cars when they were arrested in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi capital.

Peter said that during interrogation at the police station, the accused confessed to committing the crime but refused to mention other members of their gang in Abuja.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97 and 287 of the Penal code respectively.

If convicted, they face five years in prison each or with an option to pay a fine or with both.

After the charges were read to them, the accused persons pleaded not guilty.

Abdullahi granted them bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.

He ordered that that the sureties must be a Federal Civil Servant whose addresses must be verified by the prosecutor.

Abdullahi adjourned the case to April 18 for further hearing. (NAN)
